Hi. My name is Mike and I’m a 27 year old British ALT in Fukui, Japan. I am so amazed at how far we have come in such a short time. The space from our first visit to our first website hit is just incredible. I want to thank everyone who has made this possible, I have been stunned at everyone’s kindness and generosity with their time and skills. アナ・ホー Hello! My name is Anna Ho and I’m a first-year ALT from the U.S. As much as this organisation is about making kids smile, I’m certain you will crack more than a few smiles of your own. After all, it is kind of amusing being a kid’s jungle gym! :] Volunteering at the Fukui-shi Orphanage has been the single most rewarding thing I’ve done in Japan, so I hope you will be able to say the same in the near future. ハロー！アナ・ホーと申します。一年前から福井県にいるアメリカ人のALTです。この団体の目標は子供を笑顔にすることです。子供と過ごす時間の多い皆さんも、子供たちと時間を過ごしながら自分自身が笑顔になることも多いはずです。自分の体が子供たちにジャングルジムとして使われるのは意外と楽しいものです。^o^ このボランティア活動は私が日本で経験したことの中で最もやりがいのあることです。皆さんにはこれからこう言えるような経験をしてもらえれば、と思っています。 |

I’m a British ESL instructor working in Fukui, Japan. Having worked at the school where many of the kids from the orphanage attend, I was able to see the impact that our visits make; more confidence, more communication and most importantly more smiles! It’s an amazing feeling to be part of something that is so simple, but really does have such a positive result, and definitely makes a difference. 私はイギリス人で福井県で英語教師をしています。 私はつい最近まで児童施設の子供たちが通っている学校で英語教師として働いていました。 なので、施設への訪問が子供たちにどのような影響を与えたかを間近で見ていました。子供たちは自信もついてきて、いろんな人とコミュニケーションもはかるようになってきました。しかし一番驚いたのは子供たちの笑顔です。私たちがしていることはいたってシンプルなことですが、素晴らしい結果を伴うものとなりました。そしてもちろん私たちがやっていることはなんらかの良い影響を周りの人たちに与えてるのは確かだと思います

I’m a first-year JET from the United States, more specifically, the Midwest. Holding up to the Midwestern stereotype, I appreciate random-acts of kindness, laughter, and using words incorrectly. As a JET, I enjoy supporting local musicians, playing volleyball, and co-directing and writing the 2009 FJET play. If you are living abroad, I encourage you to do one thing, get involved with the people of your community. Volunteering is a great way. Hello to all ! I hope you’re as excited as I am about making kids smile! I come from the USA, more specifically, a small city called Ypsilanti found in the Great Lakes State of Michigan. It’s a place where grassroots movements are strong and many so I’m very happy to find the same to be true here! I’ve worked with several non-profits after graduating from university in ’06 and I must say, this one has the most energy. Let’s hope it doesn’t fade! I’m looking forward to promoting this organization and helping people easily find the resources and information they need in order to start their own orphanage-visiting team. 始めまして！皆さんも私のように子供たちを笑顔にするのを楽しみにしていると思います。 私はアメリカ、ミシガン州にあるイプシランティという小さな町からやってきました。そこはとても緑の多いところで、ここでも似たような風景を見ることができ、とても親近感を感じています。２００６年に大学を卒業してからいくつかのＮＰＯ法人で働く機会がありました。その中でもこのSmile Kids Japanが一番エネルギッシュに活動しているそれだと思います。このプロジェクトが影の薄いものにならないようにするためにも、いろんな人にこの活動を広めて行き、一人でも多くの子供たちと出会える機会を増やしていけたら、と思います。

How we got started
Here in Fukui there are several orphanages, but for years the foreign community here has known very little about them. Fortunately my wife found out that some of the students she was teaching at a small elementary school live in a local orphanage. At that time our prefectural ALT was trying to encourage ALTs to think about volunteering work, and my wife and I realised the chance that we had. A fantastic teacher at the elementary school introduced us to the orphanage and the staff, and set up the first meeting for us. We went into the first meeting with only a tentative idea of what we wanted to achieve, and very much prepared to compromise, but the staff welcomed us and the idea with open arms. Initially they were very surprised, and a little taken aback, as regular volunteer groups are few and far between in Japan, but they encouraged us to do whatever we wanted, as often as we wanted, with as many or few volunteers as we had. So, in May 2008 we started with our first two hours of organised chaos! We walked into a room that was too small to play the games we had prepared, and had the best two hours of our time in Japan yet. It seemed like this was going to be really difficult when we first started, and lots of people praised my wife and I for all our work. In actuality it is not really difficult at all to set up visits, and there is nothing to stop you doing this where you live.
活動の始まり
福井県にはいくつかの児童養護施設がありますが、地元の外国人は長年、その施設に対する知識はほとんどありませんでした。幸いに、妻が教えている小さな小学校に近くの児童養護施設から通っている生徒がいることが分かりました。ちょうど県教育委員会の世話係がALT（英語指導助手）たちにボランティア活動に携わるよう促していたころです。私と妻は大きなチャンスだと気づきました。小学校の親切な先生が児童養護施設とそのスタッフを紹介し、最初のミーティングを設定してくれました。
最初のミーティングに参加したとき、漠然とした目標しかなく、かなり妥協するつもりでしたが、施設のスタッフが私たちを温かく迎え、活動の提案を歓迎してくださいました。日本に定期的に活動を行うボランティア団体が少ないので、最初はずいぶん驚いたようですが、好きなように、好きなペースで、参加者が多かれ少なかれ、活動をするよう励ましてくださいました。
それで2008年の5月に、最初の2時間の「おふざけタイム」が始まりました！準備してきた遊びができないほど部屋が小さかったにもかかわらず、日本に来てから一番楽しい2時間を過ごしました。
この活動を始めたときは、難しそうに見えたので、私と妻は多くの人に褒めてもらいました。しかし訪問を計画するのはぜんぜん難しくないし、あなたも地元で同じ活動ができない理由はありません。
